A Guide to Lion’s Mane: The Ultimate Brain Supplement

Protekt Founder Nick Norris on the benefits of Clarity, our Lion's Main Mushroom supplement

The mind is a marvelously powerful engine that drives the body and powers the cognitive functions of everyday life. Self-care, psychological therapy, and emotional awareness are all great ways of taking care of the “software” of the brain, or its thoughts and modes of operation. But there is also a need to maintain the “hardware” of your mind, which is more about nourishing the physical structures that make up the brain and its interconnected neurons.

Healthy brain structure depends on what is supplied to the body through nutrients and supplements. The lion’s mane mushroom has been getting a lot of attention recently for its potential benefits as a brain supplement.

In this article, we take a closer look at what Lion's Main is all about, including:

What is lion’s mane mushroom?

Also known as hericium erinaceus, it is an edible mushroom which can be found in North America, Asia and Europe. A member of the tooth fungus group, it tends to grow on living or dead hardwood trees, and typically takes the form of a cluster of dangling spines which resembles the mane of a lion. As an edible mushroom, lion’s mane is used in many gourmet dishes and has a flavor which some say resembles lobster. It also offers a diverse collection of phytochemicals and compounds which help to explain why it’s used in traditional Chinese medicine.

What are the mental benefits of lion’s mane?

While research on the effects of hericium erinaceus is ongoing, there is a growing body of anecdotal evidence to suggest that it can positively impact cognitive function and the ability to focus on a task*. It might also help to prevent or delay the onset of dementia, reduce some symptoms of depression and anxiety, and could even help with mood regulation*. It might also shorten recovery time for injuries to the nervous system*.

Are there also physical benefits?

Yes. There are some studies that suggest lion’s mane has anti-inflammatory properties which could contribute to digestive system health and help to prevent ulcers.* I may also reduce the risk of heart disease, help with diabetes, support the immune system, and might even help to fight cancer*.

What does lion’s mane actually do for your brain?

H. erinaceus is thought to be active in the process of helping generate myelin, which is a critical component of nerve cell structure. Nerve cells, or neurons, communicate over long distances in the body by carrying electrical signals. The axon is like a long tail that transmits nerve impulses from one cell to another. A sheath of myelin surrounds the axon to insulate it electrically, ensuring that those signals can travel without weakening.
Over time, this myelin can break down, leading to a degradation of cognitive and neurological function. Lion’s mane is thought to assist in repairing myelin, helping to keep nerve signals moving at full strength*.

How quickly does it work?

It really depends on why you’re using it. It is possible to notice a difference in your mental clarity within 60 minutes of taking lion’s mane, and in fact some people--including Mark Healey, a Protekt founder--have switched to using it instead of coffee or tea in the morning. In general though, the benefits mentioned above don’t come from a one-time use, but rather from consistently taking it every day. It may take a week or longer for you to notice the desired mental or physical effects.

Is it hallucinogenic or psychoactive?

No. Lion’s mane mushroom will not get you high or cause you to have an out-of-body experience.

Is lion’s mane addictive?

No. While the desired benefits of taking h. erinaceus may fade after discontinuing use, there are no withdrawal symptoms or physiological dependence associated with it.

Is it safe?

Yes. The lion’s mane mushroom is completely edible and is enjoyed in gourmet cooking all over the world.

Yes. Lion’s mane is totally legal and available in both whole form and concentrated supplements in stores, markets and websites all over the country.

How do you use a lion’s mane supplement?

Lion’s mane supplements typically exist in a concentrated powder form. That powder can then be put into capsules, so using this supplement is as easy as swallowing with a glass of water.

 How much should I take?

Since lion’s mane can affect everybody differently, there is no set amount for a recommended daily dose. We recommend starting with a small amount and sticking with it for a few days or even weeks. Once you’ve established a baseline, you can start to increase the amount until you’re comfortable with the effects you’re experiencing.

When should I take it?

We like to take it in the morning. It’s even replaced coffee for some of us! With that being said, though, it’s not really about what time of day you take it. If you want to experience the benefits of lion’s mane, it is far more important to be consistent and make sure to take it every day.
