Zinc Sunscreen

The Case for Zinc Oxide Eco-Friendly Sunscreen

The Case for Zinc Oxide Eco-Friendly Sunscreen

The quality of our products matters a lot to us at Protekt. That’s why we have no problem being transparent and straightforward when letting customers know exactly what they’re buying. When going through our website, you’ll notice that the ingredient ‘zinc oxide’ is prevalent in every sun protectant product we offer. If every one of these products contain it, then the ingredient itself should be good… but what exactly is zinc oxide?

What is zinc oxide sunscreen?

You may be familiar with the terms ‘zinc’ and ‘oxide’ separately, but not together. At its core, zinc oxide is all-natural - it occurs originally as the mineral ‘zincite.’ Although it does appear in nature, it can be produced synthetically as well.

So, what’s the big deal? What does zinc oxide do?

Think of the component of zinc oxide as a mirror, especially when it’s active in sunscreen. When included in the ingredient list, zinc oxide reflects UV (UVB) rays that the sun gives off away from your skin and back into the atmosphere.

Our natural sunscreen protects the skin from UVA rays and infrared light as well. (UVA rays are associated with skin aging, while UVB rays are associated with skin burning.)

One thing you may notice about zinc oxide sunscreen is that, when it’s first applied, it goes on with a white tone. It might seem strange at first, but what’s great is that, before long, you’ll forget it’s even there. If you’re having trouble getting used to the white tone, you can use our Tinted Sunstick - this blends in with more of a flesh tone.

Our other zinc oxide products include:

  • SPF30 Organic Lotion Moisturizer
    • Instead of sunscreen, think of this product as more of a lotion with sun protectant included. It’s water and sweat resistant, and it does a great job moisturizing your skin while simultaneously protecting you from harmful sun rays.
  • SPF15 Zinc Oxide Lip Balm
    • Lots of us forget that our lips can be affected by the sun, too. This lip balm keeps them safe while remaining hydrated and shiny. It contains a chemical-free sunscreen solution, too, which means that it won’t put a foul taste in your mouth.
  • SPF30 Clear Mineral Sunscreen Stick
    • This is our zinc oxide sunscreen that isn’t tinted, so it will go on whiter than the tinted version - it works equally as great, though.
  • SPF30 Medium Tinted Sunscreen Stick
    • Our water-resistant sunscreen that offers a more of a flesh-colored look rather than going on with a white tinge.

Some more benefits of non-nano zinc oxide sunscreen.

Protekt's natural, zinc oxide sunscreens are non-nano, meaning the particles are not so small as to absorb into the skin. Recent studies have shown that traditional sunscreens have been found in the bloodstream of frequent users, but that will never happen when using our product. We like being close with our customers, but not that close.

Another great aspect of non-nano zinc oxide sunscreen is that there’s no waiting period. Many sunscreens on the market right now require at least twenty minutes before becoming active - and who has that kind of time? Our zinc oxide, eco friendly sunscreen starts protecting right away, so there’s no need to slow down or wait.

As a surfer or a swimmer, one big pain point about sunscreen is the fact that many brands come off in the water as soon as you hit the waves (or the pool). The great part about our product is that while it’s still a smart idea to reapply every 80 minutes or so, we only offer natural sunscreen that is strongly water resistant. For athletes who spend most of their time in the water, this is huge. Those useless formulas that slip right off as soon as the waves hit don’t stand a chance against Protekt’s eco friendly sunscreen.

Obviously, the water resistant component is great for aquatic athletes. But it’s great for on-land athletes, too. Picture a runner or a rock climber - someone who’s on their last leg of the race, or someone who’s almost reached the top of a difficult mountain. They’ve almost secured the goal when suddenly, their eyes start burning like crazy because of a mixture of sunscreen and sweat dripping into them. It’s a recipe for disaster.

That won’t happen with Protekt. Not only is sweat included in the water resistance - this means that the sunscreen won’t run nearly as much - zinc oxide sunscreen doesn’t sting when it touches the eyes.

When you’re wearing our sunscreen, nothing will be able to hold you back.

Natural, eco-friendly sunscreen that’s kind to both your body and the world around you.

Even those with sensitive skin can rest easy knowing that zinc oxide will be kind to their complexion. Zinc oxide is friendly towards those with rosacea, those who are prone to acne breakouts, and those with dry skin. It’s great organic sunscreen for all demographics.

Protekt’s natural sunscreens are also organic. It washes off easily, doesn't clog pores, and remains topical - meaning it doesn’t seep into the bloodstream, like we stated previously. And while it’s great for the human body, it’s great for the environment, too.

Protekt sunscreen is eco friendly and reef safe. Zinc is a non-reactive element and also very common, so it doesn't pollute water like other sunscreens do. Did you know that 6,000 tons of sunscreen go into the Hawaii ocean annually? And that’s just Hawaii. Imagine how much sunscreen ends up in all of our oceans across the world, many of said sunscreen is filled with harmful chemicals that upset the oceans’ plant and animal life.

Luckily, those who use natural zinc oxide sunscreen can say that they aren’t one of the many adding to the pollution of the ocean. As one of Protekt’s customers, you can rest easy knowing that you’re doing good for the environment instead of actively endangering it - all while keeping your skin safe.
